Grades 1-6

Faith Stages

Elementary Children are still concrete thinkers and therefore concentrate on learning the story and figuring out how they are like the characters. They possess a strict sense of justice and often impose it on others. They are capable of reflecting on experiences and naming their feelings so gentle adult questioning can really bring out religious assumptions and beliefs. For younger grades, notions of time and order are still spotty so Jesus and Moses are still likely to be friends. However, the upper grades have a better handle on this and are increasingly able to identify a “lesson or moral” in the story that they can apply.

Based on the popular Workshop Rotation Model, Doorways workshops relate a single bible story each month over a 3 week period we call a rotation. Because children learn in different ways, we consciously structure classes around what educators call “multiple intelligences.” (link to rotation.org) Gathered in graded classes, children experience a different workshop each Sunday devoted to another aspect of the story. A single shepherd guides the children each month for consistency while teachers change from week to week.

Children attend worship through the Children’s Message and then move to Andersen Hall where they meet their Shepherds and head off to their workshops. Shepherds then return the children to Andersen Hall at 12:15.

Family Worship Sunday
The first Sunday of every month is Family Worship Sunday. While preschool classes continue, Doorways is suspended so that children in grades 1-6 can participate in corporate worship and partake of communion.
