A Prayer Shawl Ministry
Creation of loving prayer shawls for people needing the
warm arms of concern wrapped around them - that’s the
mission of the Fairmount Presbyterian Church Prayer
Shawl Ministry.
Care and love of knitting (and crochet) have been combined
in a prayerful ministry that reaches out to those
in need of comfort and solace. Many blessings are knitted
into every shawl. The knitter begins each shawl
with prayers for the recipient. Intentions are continued
throughout the creation of the shawl. When the shawl
is completed, it is offered a final ritual before being sent
along its way.
As this gift has been sent along, some recipients have
continued the kindness by making one themselves and
passing it on to someone in need.
Thus, the blessing is rippled from person to person, with
both the giver and receiver feeling the unconditional embrace
of a sheltering, mothering God!

Making a Prayer Shawl
You will need three skeins of Lion
Brand Homespun yarn which is
available at Wal-Mart, Michaels, and
Joannes. This yarn is used because of
its soft texture and colors.
Knitted Prayer Shawls
- Use size 11 or 13 needles.
- Begin by casting on 63 stitches for
size 11 needles, or 57 for size 13.
Begin each row with purl slip 1, knit
2, purl 3, knit 3, purl 3 to end of row.
Turn and repeat the pattern, beginning
each row with purl slip 1, knit 2.
- Before beginning the third skein,
set aside at least 220 - 8” lengths of
yarn for making the fringe for both
ends of the shawl.
- Continue working until you finish
the yarn.
- Attach fringe to ends of the shawl.
Crocheted Prayer Shawls
- Use a 10mm or size P hook.
- For fringe, cut 170 pieces of yarn,
8” long, before beginning to crochet.
- Ch 42. Turn. SC for 3 rows.
Chain 2. Turn.
- In the second sc from hook, * do 3
dc, sk1 st; sc in next st, sk 1 stitch; in
next stitch, rep from * for width of
shawl. Ch2. Turn (you should have 10
dc shells across).
